In 1880 they lived in Rome Township, Ashtabula county, Ohio, and Mary Ellen's uncle William Strauss and family were living with them. Freeman and Mary Ellen and children came to Gratiot Co. Michigan from Ohio in 1883 with Henry and Sarah Corll. Each family had four children. In 1885-86 they bought/sold properties in Arcada Twp., Seville Twp. & Newark Twp., Gratiot County. They later moved to Muskegon County. In 1887 they bought properties in Holton Twp., Muskegon county and in 1895 in Muskegon city. See Carrie Corll's life story for a description of these moves. In 1900, 1910, 1920 they lived in Crockery Twp., Ottawa county, and in 1930 in Spring Lake, Ottawa county. It appears they returned to Youngstown in the early 1900's and that Mary Ellen's father, Josiah Strouse, lived with them from 1903 until his death in June 1909. Their son, Archie, was living with them when he died in October 1909. By 1910, they had returned to Michigan. One of Freeman's legs had been amputated below the knee, the result of an accident when he fell picking apples on the Crumm farm. Carrie Corll said they were very poor.
