3/27/05 notes by his granddaughter: Marilyn Beets 1207 Rockridge St Round Rock, TX 78681-5673 Tel.: (512) 244-0212 TexLyn@@austin.rr.com He packed up his belongings and emigrated to America at the age of 21.His sister, Hanna, had previously left for America, and he had friends who settled in Chicago. - one of the largest Swedish communities in America. His siblings chose to stay behind, but he had heard stories of money being found in the streets and wanted to come to "The Land of Opportunity" himself. He had dreams that he would become rich, and always hoped to visit his homeland again but never made it back. The Ellis Island manifest (line 29) shows Fred Emanuel Larson (age 21) arriving from Sweden aboard the SS Oceanic on April 3, 1903. It departed from Liverpool on March 25th. His destination is to meet his sister, Hanna Larson, who resides at 153 West 13th St. in New York City. Hanna had also arrived on the Oceanic in 1901. The Oceanic was built by Harlan & Wolff Limited, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1899. 17,272 gross tons; 704 (bp) feet long; 63 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engines, twin screw. Service speed 19 knots. 1,710 passengers (410 first class, 300 second class, 1,000 third class).Built for White Star and Dominion Lines, in 1899 and named Oceanic. Liverpool-New York service. World’s largest liner 1899-1901. Converted to wartime Aux. Cruiser. Stranded in the Shetland 9/1914. Gradually scrapped on the spot in 1924. He probably stayed with Hanna for over three months, and the left for Chicago. Hanna eventually followed. Once there, he began work as an iron moulder in a foundry. He had learned that trade at age 14 in Sweden, missing high school. He received postcards from his loving family every year on his "Namas Day", which is Fredrik (Fritz) day in Sweden on July 18th. He was naturalized on October 19, 1908 - the earliest time possible, and the witnesses were foundry co-workers August Palen and Carl Almen. He worked in the Chicago foundry until retirement. At one time, he and friends had tried to start a foundry in Belmont, IA but it did not succeed. Although he never became as rich as he had dreamed, he he was able to support his family and have a better life. In the 1910 Census, Fred E. Larsen (single, age 28) was living with the August and Hanna Newquist family at 5525 Loomis Street. He was born in Sweden of Swedish parents and had immigrated 1n 1903 and was a naturalized citizen. He was an iron moulder working in a foundry. He had been out of work for 12 weeks during the previous year. In 1917, He was living at 5931 Elizabeth Street. (Note: Per Johnson, August Newquist's nephew, was living at 59355 in the 1920 Census. In the 1920 Census, Fred E. Larson (38) is renting at 6030 South Bishop Street in Chicago. He was naturalized in 1908 and is a moulder in an iron foundry. He is married to Alma (age 34 who immigrated from Sweden in 1912). They have two sons, Elmer (5 1/2) and Wilbert (2), both born in IL. A search of the same address in the 1930 Census was not successful. Fred and Alma often sang a well-known Swedish song " Halsa Demm Darhemma" to their children. Their son, Roy, remembered the chorus and sang it to his children and grandchildren. After Alma's death, he moved into the home of his daughter-in-law, Lorraine Larson. In 1956, he moved to the Fridham Swedish Hospital Home - now a nursing home called Bel Haven. He didn't like it there since he couldn't read anything bur religious books. He developed prostate cancer, and died of heart failure in St. Francis Hospital in Blue Island, IL. He and his wife and daughter are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery.
