Frederick Ralston was born in 1882 in the southern suburbs of Manchester. He was the eldest child of a grocer named Joseph Alexander Ralston and his wife Eliza Ann Hicks. Frederick married in 1903 to Edith Fitzgerald. She appears in the 1911 census living at 19 Claremont Road in Moss Side, South Manchester but Frederick was not at home. Edith said she'd had only one child, who was living with her in that census aged 6, implying born 1904/5. It appears that the couple had another child in 1915.
Frederick died in 1924, aged 41. His address was given as 202 Moss Lane East - the grocer's shop he had lived at with his father since before 1901. His father was still alive at the time, but appears to have retired to Westmorland, having remarried then in 1922. Frederick's estate was valued at just over £525 and administration was granted to his widow Edith.
