Ellen Louisa Ralston was born in 1887 in the southern suburbs of Manchester. She was the daughter of a grocer named Joseph Alexander Ralston and his wife Eliza Ann Hicks. Ellen's mother Eliza died in 1900, when Ellen was twelve.

After her mother's death, Ellen and her siblings were brought up by their father alone, and lived at his grocery shop at 202 Moss Lane East in the Moss Side area of Manchester. As a young adult, Ellen became a milliner.

In 1914, Ellen married Harold Danby. They appear to have had two children together in the Stockport area in 1915 and 1921.

Ellen died in 1946, aged 59.
