In early manhood, he came to Pennsylvania with his brother, Mark, and shortly after settled in Alexandria township, Hunterdon county, New Jersey, where he purchased a farm of one hundred and forty-two acres and erected a flour mill. He subsequently purchased another mill property at Hickory Tavern, same county, of both of which he died possessed. During the greater part of the Revolution, the Jordan mills were kept busy grinding grain for the use of the army.
