Obituary - New Bremen Sun - 1 Feb 1901: John Friedrich Hilgemann, an old and well-known resident, died at his home, west of town, Sunday morning, 12:45 o'clock at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 5 days. Deceased was born in Lengerich, canton of Tecklenburg, province of Westphalia, May 22, 1819. When 18 years of age, he came to this country, settling first in Cincinnati. In 1837 he was confirmed in the St. Pauls church, here, and after that, was engaged in various occupations, in Cincinnati, Toledo, and on the canal. He has lived here steadily since the end of the 50's. Deceased was married four times. The first marriage was of short duration; of the second nothing more than that one daughter was born, could be learned. On March 18, 1859, he was married to Kath. Caroline Friedericke Mueller nee Schoenefelde. To this union, two sons were born who died at a tender age. The wife died March 31, 1894. In the Fall of the same year he was married to Christine Heariette Lizette Stienecker, nee Bielefeld, who survives him. Deceased was an old soldier. He served in the civil war from Oct. 8 1826 to Aug. 7, 1863, in the 37th O. V. Regiment, Company H. Since his return from the war, he busied himself for a number of years, but for quite a long while he lived principally on his pension. Since Christmas, he wasn't well. He suffered from stomach complications and that with the infirmities of old age brought on the collapse. Funeral took place Tuesday. Interment at the Plank Road cemetery. Rev. Bartram conducted the services. |
