My Mother was born on 23rd February 1910 at Church Street, Arnold, and her mother's name was given as Fanny Smith, formerly Turton. Indeed, Fanny's Marriage Certificate and Birth Certificate do not enlighten us as to her father's name. In fact, I remember my Mother exclaiming about it when my Granny died.
