Obituary[7] 7 Nov 1936 Skowhegan, Nov. 6--AP--Fred W. Weston, 43, Chairman of the State Racing Commission since its inception two years ago, died suddenly at his home in this town tonight. Stricken with a heart ailment, Mr. Weston succumbed soon after the arrival of medical attention.
The Commissioner had been in ill health for several years and for several weeks early this Spring he was a patient in a Portland hospital recovering from a heart attack suffered there.
He was born in Skowhegan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson W. Weston. A graduate of Skowhegan high school in the class of 1912, Mr. Weston ealy in life started to follow a career of horseracing. For many years he was secretary of the Skowhegan Fair Association and in this capacity also arranged the horse racing program of the fair. He campaigned vigorously for passage by the State Legislature in its session two years ago for the current pari-mutual bill. Following legislative approval, Mr. Weston was named Chairman of the Commission by Governor Brann. With this appointment, he started out to put horse racing in Maine on a high plane.
His widow and a daughter survive.
Only yesterday, Weston took an active part in the annual meeting of the Maine Agricultural Fairs' Association at Presque Isle, together with Clayton S. Steele of that town, a second Commission member.
Weston was the sole Republican member of the Commission. Steele and Milton S. Hancock, Caso, the third Commissioner, are Democrats.
Weston had been active in the fairs association several years, and at times held various offices.
Weston's death came only six days after the 1936 racing season closed at an "overcoat" meeting at Gorham.
Weston announced at that time that Maine light harness fans had bet $1,250,000 during the season, $250,000 more than last year, the first season of legal wagering in Maine.
Although light harness racing was Weston's prime interest in life, he also was interested in the gathering and sale outside the State of Christmas trees.
In past years he had helped with the training and managing of a string of race horses owned by his brother, Howard, of Skowhegan.
