I often wondered who Fred Johnson was and only give serious interest when we attached the two sets of brothers together. I now have a number of puzzle pieces and I don't know how they fit. I hope my next visit, to Chicago, will answer the ?'s. I will share with you when I see you in Sweden. Here are some more puzzle pieces. I have come across severial interesting Johnson. One John Johnson arrived in Chicago Aug. 1871, another J.P Johnson(1888 voter ) was naturalized in 1876 and lives @@ 3226 Wentworth( 1888 voter ), another J.A. Johnson lives @@ 216 Sedgwick(1888 ). We know the first two Newquist signed there final papers 11.1.76. If I were a betting man I would suspect the Johnson brother signed their final papers 10.31.76. Just speculation and certainly great fun. Thanks again. Warm regards, Mike Based on Mike Newquist's searches, he suggested we look for Fred Johnson. I began a census search on 8/30/07. It yielded very positive results. ALL GENEALOGY DATA NEEDS TO BE VERIFIED. Fred Johnson found in: Census Microfilm Records: Illinois, 1910 Age: 23 Gender: M Race: W Birthplace: SWED State: Illinois County: COOK Locale: 21-WD CHICAGO Series: T624 Roll: 264 Part: 1 Page: 45A Census Microfilm Records: Illinois, 1920 Age: 33 Gender: M Race: W Birthplace: SWED State: Illinois County: COOK Locale: 23-WD CHICAGO Series: T625 Roll: 334 Part: 1 Page: 279B The 1920 census that lists the Fred Johnson family on Sheffield Ave. in Chicago. He is 33 years old (proper age), emigrated in 1903 (same year as Per) and works as a machinist hand at a SASH & DOOR (August's?) company! Elma is 31, Florence is 8, Glenn is 4yrs 3 mos, and Helen is 1 yr, 10 mos. In 1930 he owns a house @@ 1734 Catalpa Avenue. His wife is listed as Alma (vs. Elma). Florence is 18, listed as office worker. We need a marriage license for her as a secondary source. Her year of birth should be 1912. I found a social security Death index that has promise ( Alma Johnson # 319-56-8825, born Nov. 24, 1889 ) birthdate looks very close. We could use a marriage licence for Fred and Elma ( Alma ) late 1910 or early 1911. This raw data looks very good.I have begun a directory search for Johnsons from 1904 till 1927. No news yet on the first set of brothers linked with John and Gus. (Mike, 9/07) The 1930 census info comes from AncestryLibrary.com and reads as follows: Fred Johnson, age:43, estimated birth year: abt 1887, immigration 1903, for wife 1906.It list the first child as Horence ( Florence ) Johnson age 18 not in school, office worker, Glen in school age 14, Helen age 12 in school. Whereas fred's wife is listed as Elma in the 1920 census the 1930 census list her as Alma. Glenn has been shortened to Glen. The 1920 census list Glenn as 4 years and 3 months. If that information is correct his birth month should be march. I found a social security death index listing for A.Glen Johnson born Sept.28,1915 #361-30-7363 and two that seems promising for Fred Johnson. Based on the 1920 estimation for Glenn's birth either social security death index could be our guy. The Chicago Tribune may have obit for Glenn. We need to explore for death certificates, funeral home records, financial institution records, and former employers records and a records search with the social security. This relative may require this level of research. I mentioned I'm waiting for directory listing for Johnson starting in 1904 to 1927. Telephone book are another sourse.I plan to send for Alma Johnson's social security death index. As you have noticed the census info is not consistent and has errors. As best we could determine his residence in 1930 was a house owned by Fred valued @@ $3000 located on Catalpa( 1734 ), near Gregory and Pauline. The only street I've found is Pauline, which is close to August( Marshfield ) and Per ( Elizabeth ). We could use as listing of employees of August for 1930. I have not figured how to find that doc. While the marriage license should help I believe the social security death index should be our primary source. When I saw the 3015 Sheffield address (w/Sash & Door occupation) in the 1920 census, Mapquest located it in the Near North Side around Lincoln Park. The 1734 Catalpa Ave. address in the 1930 census locates this in the same area, about 3 1/2 miles apart. It may be that Fred never lived close to Per, and that's why Gloria has no memory of him. The 1910 census Wells St. address when he was single is also in the Near North Side. I see it. I know the area well. It has always had a strong Swedish presence. The Sheffield address has many Swedes. Several of his neighbors are:John W. Gustafson, Nels Larson and Charles A. Peterson. The 1930 census address appear to be a bigger house. More people appear with each entry. Houses appear to be three and four bedroom. West of Ashland. This is most likely our relative.
Batavia began leaving its mark on the world early. Nicknamed ‘The Windmill City’, the title was justly earned by its industrial role at the turn of the century as the windmill manufacturing capital of the world. The popular Quarry Park Swimming Pool is another product of its past, for the stone mined from this earthly depression was used in large part to rebuild Chicago after the famous fire of 1871. We assume that he changed his surnname to Johnson, as his brother, Per had done. Since his destination imay have been 20 miles west of Chicago in Batavia, he might have not taken up residence in Chicago. We have 1910 and 1920 Census records for Swedish-born Gust Johnson who is the correct age, and resides with his family on E. Madison in Belvidere, IL, 75 miles west of Chicago. He is a moulder in a sewing machine company. His immigration date appears to be 1905. His wife, Elsie (b.Sweden 1891) immigrated in 1903. In the 1920 Census, their children are Violet (b.1912), Ruth (b. 1913), and Jeanette (b. April 1919), all born in IL. The main concern about this person is the possible 1905 immigration date in the Census data.
