Franz Christian was baptised on April 16 1759 in Schleswig Cathedral. He followed in his father's and grandfather's footsteps and became a cade in the Jutland Infantry regiemnt in 1773. In Oct. of 1781 he became a 2nd lieutenant in the regiment. At the time of the national census in Denmark in 1787 he lived with his parents in Fredericia, Jutland, Denmark. In 1789 he was transferred to Norway to the Northern Infantry regiment. Later that year he was promoted to 1st lieutenant in Norway's "Totenske kopani" and transferred with it to the 1st Akershusian Infantry regiment in 1792.

1792 was to be a fateful year for Franz who was now stationed in the Norwegian region of Totem. He had met a girl named Marte Gundersdatter who was to change his life completely. Their affair resulted in Marte giving birth to tins at the beginning of 1793 An officer having a child with a peasant girl was not such an unusual thing at the time. Most officers would solve the problem by paying someone to be noted as the father or they just did not care. A marriage between an officer and a peasant girl, however, was out of the question. Even marriage between an officer and the daughter of a wealthy farmer was almost unthinkable.

In the spring of 1793 Franz suffered a serious injury to his hand and was forced to resign from his military position. He was honorably discharged with a pension and marries the mother of his children. They probbly lived at Hexhusstuen (Marte's parents' home) in Toten.

Franz was known as "a merry gentleman who was good at making verses and good at playing the string harp".
