Franz enlisted in Company E, 7th Reg't Calvary, S.M. Volunteers (Union) on February 10, 1862, in Bates County, Missouri. He mustered in on April 12, 1862 in Georgetown, Missouri. He was discharged for disability on May 25, 1862 at Georgetown, Missouri.

Branches of the family adopted the spelling of Logan in the 1860's and 1870's.
