Thurston was the son of Dr. Frank Torbett who worked at the Torbett Sanitarium in Marlin, Texas, which had been founded and was run by the doctor’s brother, John. From a letter by Robert E. Howard. one-time collaborator, of Frank Thurston Torbett.

"A talented young man,” Howard wrote of Thurston to H. P. Lovecraft in December 1935, “with remarkable artistic ability. He is not only a portrait-painter of great ability but has considerable literary talent.” Howard relates further that his friend “became interested in the occult, and now devotes practically all his time to this study. He is sincere in his devotion to it, but I regret his interest in it, since it has caused him to neglect his undoubted talents.”
