The story goes that because the enemy was pressing hard upon them they were forced to vacate camp early one morning. Francis, having a sore foot, could not keep up with his company and was forced to drop out. Said he to his buddy, "I can go no farther. You go on. I will get behind a tree. I will get one of them." His buddy went on over a hill. and after awhile he heard first the report of one musket, then the report of several muskets. Francis was never heard from again. (This story has been handed down from Rhoda Hoschar, who was a sister of Francis. Rhoda died many years ago.)
