Palmer, 74 year old former Manito mayor and a grocer for many years, died in his home at 7:45 a.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Manito Community Methodist church with Rev. Harold Simpkins officiating. Burial will be in Meadow Lawn cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Johnson Funeral Home in Manito. The casket will not be opened at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Mr. Palmer entered the grocery business in Manito in 1930 and operated Palmer's Market until 1956 when he sold the business to his son, Engle Ben Palmer. However, he did not retire, but continued working in the markets meat department and the business office of the firm until this year. He served the village of Manito as a trustee for 10 years and was mayor for 12 years. It was during one of his terms as mayor that he was instrumental in establishing the Manito Water Works in 1937. Mr. Palmer also served as secretary of the board of education of Manito high school for 12 years, was a member and past secretary of the Optimist club church at Manito. He was born at Manito on Jan. 23, 1890, a son of Engle B. and Nettie Desutter Palmer. He married Louisa Jackson at Forest City on Jan. 14, 1917 and she survives. Also surviving are the son, Engle Ben Palmer, of Manito, and one grandson. One son and seven brothers and sisters preceded him in death. References
