Francis Kelly was baptised on 30th April 1843 at Athy in County Kildare, the youngest of seven children of a labourer named Dennis Kelly and his wife Bridget (Biddy) Murphy. The family lived at Cloney, about five miles north of Athy. When Francis was 25 years old he married an Ellen McGrath at Athy, but no further sightings have been found of the couple.
