  1. Frank M. Fowler is buried in Cincinnati's Wesleyan Cemetery (located at NW corner of Colerain and Hoffner (or Huffnek) Streets), lot 10 Section Q. The headstone gives the following information: "F.M. Fowler, 1843 - 4/22/1881, 11th O.V.I. Co. K." The graves registration card records the date of death as 4/22/1880.) There can be no doubt that this is the grave of Rev. Frank M. Fowler as there was only one F.M. Fowler who served in Company K of the 11th Batallion of Ohio's Volunteer Infantry.
  2. The following obituary was carried in the Cincinnati Daily Gazette's 7 Mar 1881 issue: "Fowler - At 105 Clinton Street, March 4 of tumor on the brain, Rev. F.M. Fowler of Mt. Healthy, Ohio, aged 39 years. Funeral from Finley Chapel, Monday, March 7 at 2 pm. Friends invited."
  3.   The 1880 census for Ohio, Hamilton Co., Springfield Twp., Wyoming Precinct enumerates Frank M. Fowler, born in Ohio, age 38, occupation - clergyman, father born in PA, mother born in KY. Also enumerated in the household were his wife, Margaret, age 35, and four children: Walter S., age 10; Grace, age 8; Frank M., age 5; and Alberta, age 2 all born in Ohio.
  4.   The 1866 Cincinnati city directory includes a listing for "Frank M. Fowler, mason, h. 137 Linn St." The 1870 Cincinnati city directory includes a listing for "F.M. Fowler, bklayer, h. 137 Linn St." The 1870 Ohio census for Hamilton County enumerates a Frank M. Fowler, age 29, occupation - bricklayer in Cincinnati's 8th Ward. No one else is enumerated in this household.
  5.   There is an extant diary which he kept during 1863 (in the possession of his great-grandson, William G. "Billy" Brown of Bar Harbor, Maine) which proves that the Frank M. Fowler who was in Company K, 11th Regiment, OVI was the same person as the subject of these notes and which provide a glimpse of his daily existence as a soldier during this time. He writes on Dec 8, 1863 that he would like to be at 160 Linn St. for just an hour. He also makes reference to United Brethren Church.
  6.   Research to date has not revealed the names of Francis (Frank) M. Fowler's parents. The information provided the census taker for the 1880 Ohio Census was that his father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Kentucky. Note that the Rachael Thomson enumerated in 1850 census was born in Kentucky lending further support to theory that she could have been the mother of Francis M. Fowler. Letters which Frank wrote to his wife in August 1870 mention his mother, proving that she was still alive in 1870. His mother is not mentioned in his 1881 obituary.
  7. Compiled Military Service Record for Frank M. Fowler records that he enlisted on Sept. 30, 1862 as a volunteer for three years of service in the Union Army as a private in Company K, 11th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers Infantry (OVI). He was later transferred to Company I. He stated in his enlistment papers that his age was then twenty years and eight months. It is, therefore, assumed that he was born in January 1842. His enlistment papers further state that he was a brick mason, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, had blue eyes, light hair and complexion, and was 5' - 5" tall. (Another military record gives his height as 5'-8" and his hair color as dark.) He was captured by the enemy near Middleburg (or Middleton), TN on 8 Mar. 1863 and parolled prior to Mar. 22, 1863. He was hospitalized in Murfreesboro and Chattanooga, TN from July 1863 to April 1865. He was mustered out of the Army on May 23, 1865. His widow, after his death, applied for his pension (Case 352,190 dated Aug. 24, 1884). Also included in Company K of 11th Ohio Infantry was a William A. Fowler (who died) and a Corporal Oscar B. Fowler. Frank refers in his 1863 diary to a person named "Oss," possibly a nickname for Oscar. (Refer to "Eleventh Regiment (or Battalion?) Ohio Volunteer Infantry - Vol, II," p. 349, "Eleventh Battalion Ohio Volunteer Infantry - Vol I," p. 707, and "The History of Hamilton County," by Ford, 1881, p. 109 for historical details for the Eleventh Ohio Volunteers Infantry.)
  8.   There is a Francis M. Fowler, age 9, enumerated in the 1850 Census for Hamilton Co., Ohio in Cincinnati's 9th Ward, living in a household headed by Joshua Thomson, a cook - age 30 (Call No. 690). Also listed in this household is Rachael Thomson - age 32, born in Kentucky, Lenora Thomson - age 2, Sarah Thomson - age 17, and Jane Worthington - age 19, born in England. This record of a Francis M. Fowler is the only record of a Frank or Francis Fowler found in the Index to the 1850 Ohio Census. It is possible that the nine year old Francis M. Fowler living in the Joshua Thomson household in Cincinnati's 9th Ward in 1850 was not the Francis Marion Fowler, subject of these notes. There is a Civil War military service record for another Francis Marion Fowler who was a member of Company D, 159th Ohio Volunteers Infantry. The 1880 Ohio census also enumerates another Frank Fowler born about 1842 and residing in Cincinatti's 5th Ward (while Rev. Frank M. Fowler is living in Springfield Township in Hamilton County).
