Francis Epes IV (ABT 1697-1759)

By 1722, Francis was already living at "Causons", located on the Appomattox River on the East side of Causons Creek, near where the Hopewell National Cemetery is now located. This tract was part of the 1700 acres patented by Francis Epes I on August 26, 1635, for transporting himself, sons John Francis and Thomas, and 30 others "in Spanish frigate in 1629". On May 2, 1724, he was named Sheriff of Prince George County. In 1734 he received a land patent in Amelia, then in 1735 received the patent for the 400 acre "Old Place" property in Amelia. In 1736 he became a member of the House of Burgesses, holding that office until 1749. December 1st, 1740, he repatented his 400 acres in Amelia Co., and in 1741 came to live in Amelia Co., in that part which later became Nottoway. In 1745 he received yet another land patent in Amelia/Nottoway. On February 10, 1755, Francis deeded "Old Place" to son Francis. (Amelia Deed Book 5, page 537)
