Francis with two of his brothers, Joseph and Bampfield, his wife Maryand their son, James, then six years old (1733) came to America fromEngland in 1733 and first settled in Surry County, Virginia. His brothers Joseph and Bamphylde, Jr. were scalped by Indians (theyleft no issue). At the same time James, son of Francis, was capturedby the Indians. For a large reward, he was delivered to his father byfriendly Indians. Later, while prospecting in Austin Sledges in the woods near where hisbrothers had been killed, Francis was shot at by Indians. Beingdisgusted with this section of the country, he moved his family toEdgecombe County, now Nash County, North Carolina. There he wasgranted a tract of land - 2000 acres of which was in Swift County. Heand his wife Mary were buried near Drake's Bridge, Swift Creek, NashCounty, North Carolina. This Francis Drake is not to be confused with Francis Drake, son ofRichard who owned land in Orange and Chatham Counties in NC. |
