At the 1900 census, Melvina had been married to Ernst Lindner for 4 years and had her youngest son by Francis, John H., living with her. The other two boys were living with Francis. According to the birth dates of the two children Melvina had (presumably) with Ernst, a divorce must have been granted to Francis and Melvina between 1891 and 1896. In the 1900 census, Francis was in Williamstown Twp.

According to the 1910 census, Francis was widowed and living with his son Howard in Lansing. He continued to live with Howard until his death.

The following records were found in the Vital Records of Michigan - it is not certain these are children of Francis Barker.

Tuscola County Advertiser Obit, Sept 2, 1921

Francis H Barker was born in Sylvan township, Washtenaw county, October 24, 1848, the son of Mr and Mrs William Barker. He lived with his parents until he was 31 years of age when he married Miss Melvina Wort of Carson City and settled at Pewamo, later moving to Williamston. Three children were born to this union, Samuel W. and John H of Lansing, and Howard S of Akron.

After 1895, he made his home with his boys, having lived with Howard S Barker for the past 13 years, where he died August 25, 1921, at the age of 72 years and 10 months. Besides his sons he is survived by three sisters, Mrs James Ross of Pasadena, Calif., Mrs IC Wilmore of Stockbridge, Mrs Henry Harmon of Lansing and one brother, MG Barker of Oak Park, Ill.

Funeral services were held from the Akron ME church, Friday, August 26. Rev. RR Feuell officiating, with burial in the family cemetery at Chelsea.

This obit has the same birth info as the death certificate which Howard supplied the info for. However, on the marriage license (that Francis probably supplied the info for) it shows Lyons. I tend to go with Lyons since more than likely Francis supplied that info. I have to wonder why he was born in Ionia Co. when the family lived in Washtenaw. Visiting perhaps? Francis' wife's name was spelled WORT according to census info. His marriage certificate with Baker and Wart is all messed up.

Canadian Dr. Frederick Banting, with Charles Best and J.J.R. Macleod, isolated insulin, the substance secreted by the pancreas that allows the body to metabolize sugars in 1921.

Since then, insulin has allowed millions of diabetics around the world to lead healthy, active lives.
