And That's What I Want to Bel By JULES M. ROSENTHAL Years ago children decided to become cowboys or truant officers or dump pickers without any outside help. But not today. Now vocational guidance counselors stand ready with zest to suggest a test to see what's best. Cowboy? How did he score on the horse-sense problems; Truant officer? Was there enough mean meaning in his answers; Dump picker? How did he do in the multiple choice section? And now children's books are helping pre- schoolers and primary graders understand occupations from apple packing to zebra tracking. Jeffie Cole is sure he's got the key to his future job all "fingered" out. "I Want To Be a Musician" by Carla Green is one of a series published by Childrens Press in Chicago. The 36 books do an excellent Job of acquainting youngsters with a wide variety of trades and professions. And clever drawings by Frances Eckart lend a light touch while accurately illustrating various phases of the occupation. The series is designed to encourage beginners to read for their own pleasure and, at the same time, to gain a better understanding of the world. Dr. Paul Witty, Northwestern University, served as consultant on all of the books which range from the expected Cowboy and Space Pilot to the unexpected Orange Grower and Restaurant Owner.
