Savage, D eceased Summit, OR, Oct. 6 - Special - Mrs. Frances A. Savage, who died 18 September at the home of her daughte r, Mrs. J.H. Crain, at Dilley, was born in Illinois 17 October 1828. S he was married to Morgan Savage on the plains in 1846. To them was bo rn a family of 12 children, 11 of whom survive. These are: Mrs. Jasper Mi ller of Summit; John Savage of Lincoln County; George Savage of Lane Count y; Charles Savage of Summit; Mrs. Frank Thresher of Summit; Mrs. L. Hulbe rt of Linn County; Mrs. Dolly Turner of Pendleton; Mrs. J.E. Morrow of Was hington County; Mrs. J.H. Crain of Dilly; T.J. Savage of Dilley; and Mr s. Ida Burgen of San Francisco. Mrs. Savage and her husband first settl ed on a Donation Land Claim in Benton County near the present town of Airl ie. In 1876 they moved to Summit, where Mr. Savage died 7 September 190 4. The story of Mrs. Savage's trip across the plains is one of thrilling a dventure. Becoming separated from the main emigrant train, Mr. and Mrs. Sa vage and her father went without food for days while crossing the lava be ds in southeastern Oregon. Much of the time they waded through snow and sl ush, and reaching western Oregon in late December, Mrs. Savage's father, e xhausted, became sick and died. His body was buried in Cow Creek Canyon. P ushing on, Mr. and Mrs. Savage secured dried salmon from Indians and final ly made their way to Independence, in Polk County.

Tri-Weekly Republican, Corvallis, Benton County, OR, Friday, September 24, 1909: Pioneer of 1847 Dies Another of the Oregon pioneers has gone to the final reward. This time dea th has claimed Frances Ann Savage, whose maiden name was Brisbin and who w as born in Illinois, October 17, 1828. She departed this life at the ho me of her daughter, Lizzie Crain of Dillie, Washington County, September 1 8th, 1909. The deceased was united in marriage to Morgan R. Savage, whi le the two were making their trip across the plains, June 18, 1846. The ir trip was by ox team and a very long and tedious one, taking from the fi rst of April to the latter part of December. The first winter was spent ne ar Independance, and during the following season, or in 1847; they locat ed on a Donation Land claim near Airlie. This was sold to Greenberry Smit h, then living near Blodget valley in the vicinity of Philomath. The decea sed has been a resident of Summit since 1867, but she has been a reside nt of Benton County for sixty-two years. She was preceeded to the spirit w orld by her husband, Sept. 7, 1904. There was born to them twelve childre n, eleven of whom survive their parents. They are Martha Jane Miller, of S ummit; John Savage, of Lincoln County; Geo. Savage, of Marcola, Lane Count y; Charles Savage, of Summit; Addie Thrasher, of Summit; Lydia Hulber t, of Linn county; Dollie Turner, of Pendleton; Mary Morrow, Lizzie Crain, and Thomas Savage, of Dillie, and I da Borgen, of San Francisco. The remains were taken to Summit where they w ere laid away by the side of the husband who had gone before. The funer al was conducted by Rev. S.M. Wood, of Corvallis, and people from all ov er Benton were present.

According to the 1900 Summit, OR census Frances had six children and 4 ha ve survived. Her parents were born in PA, and she had been married f or 54 yrs.
