Mrs. Florence Wolfe, Centenarian Celebrates Birthday this Saturday [1963]
Mr. Florence (Flora) Wolfe will be a centenarian with the arrival of Saturday, Nov. 30, sixty-three of those years spent in Guthrie county. A card shower is planned by family and friends to congratulate Grandma Wolfe on her milestone. Mrs. Wolfe was born in Illinois where she was also married and came in 1900 by covered wagon to Guthrie County, with her husband, the late Ed Wolfe, and three children, Sid Wolfe; and Sylvia Shaefer of Stuart and Margaret Moor of Guthrie Center. After taking up residence on a farm in Baker township, the family resided there for many years, before moving to Valley township. Ed Wolfe served for many years as a justice of the peace in Baker and Valley townships. Another daughter Hallie Heise was born after the family arrived in Iowa. In February of 1941 Mr. Wolfe died, and Mrs. Wolfe continued to reside in her home on North Twelfth street for many years. For the past 8 years she has been a resident of nursing homes, and for the past six years has been at the Messinger Nursing Home. Her move to a nursing home was necessitated due to failing eyesight. “Grandma” Wolfe enjoys listening to music on the radio, and also keeps up with the news broadcasts. Although in frail health and eyesight failure, she listens to television and the stories presented there. She was baptized into the Presbyterian church as a young girl, and has maintained this as her faith. She has been devoted to her family, which includes the three daughters, and one son, sixteen grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 5 great- great grandchildren.
