Florence McCarthy

Services for Mrs. Gerald (Florence) McCarthy, 89, of Manor Care Nursing Center, formerly of 1940 Altura Drive, Otter Creek, Iowa, and Ecumenical Towers, will be at 11 am Saturday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Otter Creek.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 pm Friday at Ed Siegert-Al Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish wake service at 5 pm.

Mrs. McCarthy was a long-time employee of the former Roshek's department store and also worked at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club.

She was born on Oct. 16, 1904, in Jackson County, Iowa, daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Lambe) McLaughlin. She died at 4:25 am Wednesday, Sept. 28, 1994, at the nursing center.

She married Gerald McCarthy on Aug. 23, 1932, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Otter Creek; he died on July 24, 1964.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Norma Dunn of Dubuque, with whom she resided; a son, Joe (and Margaret) McCarthy of Maquoketa, Iowa; four granddaughters, Sheila Dunn of Palatine, Ill., Mrs. Ken (Barbara) Dunn-Swanson of Harlan, Iowa, Mrs. Joe (Karen) Vondracek of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Lisa Dunn of Des Moines.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Sister Mary Irene RSM, and Mrs. Melvin (Frances) Wolfe; and four brothers, Dan, Frank, Ray and Justin McLaughlin.

A Florence McCarthy Memorial Fund has been established.
