Flora spent her childhood at Taueru. She attended the local dances with the rest of her family on the condition that they could rise at the usual time next morning. They moved to Kaituna. She attended the Masterton District High School. Flora worked as an operator in the Telephone exchange. The Burling family then purchased a farm at Manaia Road which is now the Hood Airdrome.
