Puttlingen belonged to France after 1648 and again after 1697 (with Metz). From 9 July 1737 to 23 February 1766 Lorraine was was a domain of Duke Stanislaw Leszczynski, King of Poland (1704-1709 and 1733-1736). Leszczyski's election for the Polish throne was supported by the Zamoyski family. It was Andrzej Zamoyski who invited settlers (colonists) from Puttlingen and the area to his land in 1784. This is how Nikolaus, son of Ferdinand ended up in Poland. After death of Stanislaw Leszczynski in 1766 the area became part of France again, but in the same year was exchanged for land in Alsace and given to Nassau-Saarbruck in the Holy Roman Empire.
