Ethel Maud McGregor was already pregnant with her first child, Charles, when she married Joseph Morland. One month after Charles' birth in January 1901, Joseph enlisted in the army and went abroad to serve in the Boer War in Ladysmith, South Africa. Ethel and the baby moved in with her parents until Joseph returned in June of 1902.
