In 1926 Charles and his youngest brother Arthur visited Inverness to meet his future in-laws. Charles was called up to the army during World War two because of his telegraphy skills, even though he was in his forties at the time which was old for a conscript. He was sent to Germany where he telegraphed the results of the Nuremberg trials back to London. His hobby was photography and he developed his own prints and slides.
