Esther Newborn was baptised on Christmas Day 1796 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, daughter of Catherine Newborn, who was 22 and unmarried. When Esther was about eighteen months old her mother married a blacksmith named Thomas Cox, with whom she had three children, who were Esther's half-siblings. Esther was obviously close to her half-siblings: she witnessed her half-brother Matthew's marriage in 1821, signing herself Etty Newborn.

Esther's stepfather died in 1830. The following year, on 6th December 1831, Esther was married at Barnack to a market gardener and cottager named John Lattermore. He was about thirteen years younger than Esther. When they married she was about 35 and he was 22. They settled at Pilsgate, a hamlet in Barnack parish between Barnack village and the neighbouring town of Stamford to the north-west. John farmed six acres of land there. Today there is a modern development at Pilsgate called Lattimer's Paddock, which may well be the same piece of land. John and Esther had three children together at Pilsgate between 1832 and 1835, although their son Charles died when just a few weeks old.

The 1841 and 1851 censuses each find the family living at Pilsgate. Esther's mother died in 1851.

Esther's younger daughter, Betsy, died from scarlet fever in 1855, aged nineteen.

The following year, Esther's only surviving daughter, Mary, married a Henry Merryshaw. The 1861 census finds Esther and John living at Pilsgate with a young grandson, John Merryshaw.

Esther died at Pilsgate on 10th March 1865, aged 68. John survived her by 25 years, and remarried six months after Esther's death.

In both the 1851 and 1861 censuses, Pilsgate is listed as a separate parish for the purposes of the census. Vision of Britain describes Pilsgate as a hamlet within the parish of Barnack at this time. It did later become a civil parish in its own right in 1866, only to be reunited with Barnack in 1887.
