John Lattermore was born on 2nd November 1809 and baptised three days later at Ufford in Northamptonshire, son of William and Elizabeth Lattermore.
On 6th November 1831, aged 22, John married Esther Newborn at Barnack, a couple of miles north-west of Ufford. She was about thirteen years his senior. They settled at Pilsgate, a hamlet in the north-west of the parish of Barnack, where John was a cottager and market gardener, farming six acres of land. Quite likely it was the same piece of land on which the modern development called Lattimer's Paddock now stands.
John and Esther had three children together between 1832 and 1835: Mary, Charles and Betsy, although their son Charles died when just a few weeks old.
The 1841 and 1851 censuses each find the family living at Pilsgate.
John and Esther's youngest daughter, Betsy, died of scarlet fever in 1855, aged 19.
The following year, John's only survived daughter, Mary, was married to a farmer called Henry Merryshaw.
The 1861 census finds John and Esther still living at Pilsgate. They had their grandson, John Merryshaw, living with them.
Esther died on 10th March 1865, aged 68.
Six months later, John married again. His second wife was a widow called Christiana Baxter, formerly Littledyke, and they married at the independent chapel in the town of Stamford, just north-west of Pilsgate. After their marriage, they returned to Pilsgate, appearing there in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses. Christiana's granddaughter was living with them in 1871.
In the early 1880s, it would appear that Christiana left John. In January 1882, he placed an advertisement in the local newspaper, the Stamford Mercury, in which he "earnestly entreated" her to "return at once to her home". It is not clear whether she did return home. She appears to have gone to live in Boston in Lincolnshire, where her daughter lived. Christiana died in Boston in 1886. The death notice in the local newspaper described her as "widow of John Lattermore", even though he appears to have been still alive. Perhaps she had presented herself as a widow in Boston rather than explain that she was separated from her husband.
John appears to have moved away from Pilsgate after Christiana left. He went to live at the Bede House at Lyddington in Rutland, about fifteen miles west of Pilsgate. The Bede House was an almshouse, converted from a wing of a former palace of the Bishops of Lincoln. John died there on 30th December 1890, aged 81.

In both the 1851 and 1861 censuses, Pilsgate is listed as a separate parish for the purposes of the census. Vision of Britain describes Pilsgate as a hamlet within the parish of Barnack at this time. It did later become a civil parish in its own right in 1866, only to be reunited with Barnack in 1887.
