Esther Marshall was born in 1848 at Luton in Bedfordshire, the youngest child of a straw plaiter named Sarah Marshall, formerly Almond, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer and later brewery labourer. It is quite likely that Esther was born in the hamlet of East Hyde a couple of miles south of the town rather than in the town itself. In the 1851 census she appears with her parents and siblings at Newmill End in East Hyde in the parish of Luton. By 1861 the family had moved into the town of Luton itself and were living at 72 Albert Road, with Esther described as a bonnet sewer - straw plaiting and hat making being one of the biggest industries in the area.

Esther's father died in 1863, when she was 14 years old. Esther herself died on 30th January 1867 at the Union Workhouse in Luton, aged 18. She was buried at the General Cemetery on Rothesay Road in Luton. Her mother survived her by just over a year.
