Esther Gay married 1st) Mr. Booker and 2nd) James Brown Ray, Gov. of Indiana. This relationship is confirmed in "The Papers of Henry Clay" By Henry Clay, James F. Hopkins, Mary W. M. Hargreaves, pg. 721: John Gay, born in Rockbridge County, Virginia. and commissioned an ensign of Virginia militia in 1779, attained the rank of Major before his resignation in 1803, had also served for many years as a magistrate of Rockbridge County. An early settler of Wayne County, Indiana, he there acted as Deputy County Clerk; he did not receive a federal appointment. His daughter, was probably Mrs. Esther Booker, widow of Samuel P. Booker, a native of Virginia and, at his death in July, 1823, wealthy proprietor of a general store in Centerville, Indiana. Mrs. Booker and Mr. Ray had been married in Sept. 1825. |
