Anecdote: “Are you related to a guy named Bud Paulin from Le Mars, Iowa? He was a good friend to Clarence Kaasch, who is now deceased. The first time I met him, I was maybe 16, Clarence introduced him to me as ‘Bud Paulin’...I looked at him and said ‘Wow, I didn't know there was really a guy named Paul Bunyan, I thought it was always a fairy tale!’ If Bud Paulin was related to you, I want to tell you he was one of the nicest persons I ever have met... and I've met a lot of really nice people.”S6 [Bud was a big man, over 6’ tall, and broad-chested.]

Bud loved fishing, especially at their house at Lobster Lake, Minnesota. He caught catfish from the banks of the lake, and from the boat brought in northerns, crappie, bluegills and sunfish. He had a woodworking shop and a built-in pool table at the Le Mars house. At family gatherings, he was often seen playing horseshoes. Bud and Ruth liked to travel. In the early 1950s they drove from Iowa to Alaska, following the newly-built Al-Can Highway. They also drove to and around Mexico in 1963.

Also in the early 1960s, Bud was one of nineteen men who made a Farm Bureau Trade Mission to Japan. They toured Japanese farms, visited the Toshogu shrine, and met with U.S. Embassy and Japanese government officials.
