Ernest engineered a number of inventions, including the 'magic' self-erasing writing slate and an automatic cigarette dispenser. He also invented an automatic light controller for street lighting in the early 1900s, but was unable to persuade Hastings District Council to trial it. He could not afford to keep up all his patents and in 1907 the National Automatic Light Controller (Sparks Patent) Company Ltd was dissolved (recorded in the Files of Dissolved Companies, Public Record Office, Kew).
