Born on March 28, 1919, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Irwin S. and Blanch I. (Bowen) Gunn, she married Joseph B. Varley on July 23, 1939, in Kalamazoo. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1988. She then married Al R. Johnson in Lenawee County, Mich., on Jan. 13, 1994, and he preceded her in death on July 12, 2007.

She worked at Fields Beauty Shop in Jackson before owning and operating the Beauty Time Beauty Shop in Addison for many years. Erlene was a 4-H leader, a Sunday School teacher and former member of the Assembly of God Church in Adrian. She then was a member of Heart O' The Lakes United Brethren In Christ Church of Brooklyn.
