The 15th Marines were formed as an Artillery Regiment on September 7, 1944 on Guadalcanal. The 15th Marines were made up of seasoned Marine Artillerists from 4th, 22nd, and the 29th Marines. The Regiment was only in existence for 19 months but saw some of the worst action in WWII, Okinawa. For their actions during the battle, they received the Presidential Unit Citation.

The Regiment was withdrawn from Okinawa after it was declared secure in July 1945. It was redeployed to Guam to prepare for the invasion of the home island of Japan. After the surrender of the Japanese, the Regiment was sent to Tsingtao, China to accept the surrender of the Japanese in that area. The 15th Marines remained in China until their disbandment in April 1946.
