EMERSON BARKER ANNIS was born June 16, 1816 at Rochester, New York; died June 30, 1866 at Annis Mill, Georgia; married 1841, Jane Preachet Shumaker {1814-1867} at Richmond, Virginia. In a letter written to Alonzo L. Annes on October 31, 1891 by his son, Jesse M. Annis, we find the following: "My father was born in Rochester, New York. He left his father when 18 years old and went to Richmond, Virginia. There he married Jane Shumaker. My father had two brothers, Asa and Joseph, and two sisters whose names I do not know. Think one married a Mr. Silvertine or some such name. Father died June 30, 1866, aged 52. Have heard him say his brothers lived near Butterfield, Canada. I believe one of my father's sisters lives in Canada and one in Michigan." Emerson's son, Charles S. Annis also wrote to Alonzo L. Annes, on February 29, 1892: "My father had a brother by the name of John Annis who was a Baptist preacher. He went to Canada when a young man, to Butterfield, I thnik, and according to last accounts, was married there. Prior to the Civil War Emerson removed his family to Jasper County, Georgia where he built a mill, and business, that was quite successful. His wife, Jane was born July 5, 1814 at Fredericksburg, Virginia, and died August 10, 1867 at Annis Mill, Georgia.
