Elsie was the second of ten children.

She graduated from the South Australia's first training course for kindergarten teachers in the 1900s. She worked as a teacher at the Methodist Ladies College in Adelaide for four years.

She and her husband moved to a farm near Angaston in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, after marrying, where she raised five children.
