From Find A Grave Dr. Ellwood Smith, 81, of Wayne, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at the Simpson House in Philadelphia. Born Aug. 10, 1928, in Meadville, he was the son of the late Clarence William and Marian Frances Gable Smith. He graduated from Rocky Grove High School in 1946 and later from the Philadelphia College of Optometry. He had been employed as a director of admissions at Devereux Foundation in Devon for 43 years and retired from there in 1991. Dr. Smith was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a volunteer for more than 50 years at the Devon Horse Show and for the past 10 years at the Simpson House. He enjoyed playing bridge at the Wayne Senior Center. He was a member of Wayne Presbyterian Church in Wayne, where he was a deacon. He was also a member of the Stephen Ministry at the church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a private. He also served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a SSG during the Korean War. Dr. Smith is survived by a brother, Jerome Smith and his wife, Jenni, of Broomall; and four sisters, Colleen Ahrens of Oil City, Patricia Lindberg and her husband, Richard, of Sandusky, N.Y., Carol Campbell and her husband, Charles, of Berea, Ohio, and Lois Kline of Franklin. In addition to his parents, Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Snyder; three brothers, Clyde Smith, Keith Smith, and Corliss Smith. Friends are invited to call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gardinier Funeral Home Inc., 1315 Chestnut St., Franklin. Friends are also invited to attend the funeral service to be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. David R. Adam officiating. Interment will be at Lupher Chapel Cemetery.
