    Elkanah Mayo
    died
    Sept. 30, 1834,
    AE. 79.
[Note: techinally AE. 79 means 79th year, so age 78, born about 1756. Many secondary sources say 1755, but to avoid implying he is a twin to his brother Issachar, it seems reasonable to say 1756.]

    Elkanah Mayo died Sep't 30th 1832
[Note: ??? This appears to be recorded with other deaths from 1832 and 1833 and the page ends before 1834 starts. It is not known when the gravestone was erected and by whom. It is not clear if the age of death on the gravestone is an independent datum, or was calculates from the 1834 death date. Elkanah executed a deed 5 Sep 1832 and acknowledged it 6 Sep 1832 Barnstable deed 10:270, but this is somewhat ambiguous. One might think it would reflect a certain vitality and so favor the 1834 date, but alternatively, as it is in recognition of "her kindness and attention to me", it might also reflect that he had been sick and that the end was near. No probate or other evidence has been found to conclusively show one or the other death date is right or wrong.]
