GARDNER, Elizabeth, wid. Capt. John, [died] Sept. 27, 1769, in her 88th y. NR4 [Note: NR4=Essex Gazette. Unfortunately the date of the newspaper is not given so cannot tell if this was contemporary or some after-the-fact recreation. No actual death record or gravestone found. Source:Gardner, Frank A. Thomas Gardner, Planter (Cape Ann, 1623-1626, Salem, 1626-1674) and Some of His Descendants, p. 143, gives this date as "Sept. 27, 1770", citing "Family Notes". The nature of those notes is not explained, so again, contemporary or not? Source:Perley, Sidney. History of Salem, Massachusetts, p. 1:69, also gives 27 Sep 1770, basis not explained.]
- Source:Gardner, Frank A. Thomas Gardner, Planter (Cape Ann, 1623-1626, Salem, 1626-1674) and Some of His Descendants, p. 143, says of Elizabeth: "She died Sept. 27, 1770, in her 88th year. Letters of administration were granted to her son John, Jan. 6, 1773." Besides the questions about the death date itemized above, Essex Probate file 10609 contains only a bond dated 6 Jan 1773 for John Gardner as adminstrator of "his late Wife: Elizabeth Gardner dec'd Intestate which came by her former Husband: Benj'a Herbert Dec'd". Clearly the Gardner Genealogy has misinterpreted this document, as the very thorough description makes it clear that the probate is for John's own wife Elizabeth (his 2nd wife), not his mother. No probate is found for his mother.
