{Note: this source quotes the tombstone which forms the basis for the death record of Elizabeth Herbert: "Here lie buried the remains of Elizabeth, consort of Capt. Benjamin Herbert. In her were united the affectionate wife, the tender Parent, the Friend to the distressed and in a Word, the Pious and good Woman. Obt. Octr. 23d, A.D. 1772. AEtatis 55." (see also Find A Grave), and never mentions a second marriage. The marriage record to John Gardner names the wife was "wid. Elizabeth Herbert", and given the exact same age and death date, it seems likely this gravestone of Elizabeth Herbert and the newspaper obit of Elizabeth Gardner refer to the same person, and that Elizabeth was simply buried in the same cemetery with her first husband and under the name of that husband and all her children.]
