Facts and Events
[edit] About Elizabeth "Wurte" WattsElizabeth Watts, also known as "Wurte" Watts, was the supposed mixed-blood daughter of John Watts, a British government interpreter [known as "Old Forked Tongue Watts"], who died in 1770. Her mother was a sister of "Old Tassel", "Doublehead" and "Pumpkin Boy". She was the sister of John Watts, Cherokee Chief, also known as "Young Tassel". It has been speculated that Elizabeth Watts had children (but apparently not married) with both Trader John Benge and Nathaniel Gist, although some researchers have expressed doubt regarding this story. She is also said to have been the mother of George Gist, known by his Cherokee name, "Sequoyah", who is credited as creating the Cherokee alphabet and writing system.
