Research Notes

  • This Elizabeth (James) Campbell is often confused with Elizabeth (Taylor) Campbell who was supposedly also married to a different man of the same name, "Patrick Campbell". However, confusion swirls around these families and some have claimed that they are one in the same.
  • This Elizabeth has traditionally been given the maiden name of "James" - where is the proof?
  • This Elizabeth has traditionally been given the parents of "William James and Elizabeth/Lettice Taylor" - where is the proof?

  2. Many trees identify her as Elizabeth James, daughter of William James and Elizabeth or Lettice Taylor, but there appears to be no proof. Given the variations on the mother's first name, this feels like speculation, possibly based on a misinterpretation of the 1721 baptism of Elizabeth Taylor, daughter of James and Lettice Taylor.
  3. Birth year estimated on the assumption that she married both Patrick Campbell and John Couch (as seems to be commonly believed) and was the mother of John Campbell and Martin Couch.
