Facts and Events
Among the Donald Lines Jacobus papers at the Connecticut Historical Society is a typescript titled "Bradley Family of New Haven." In this Jacobus writes of Elizabeth Bradley: We hear nothing of the stepmother [ie, Elizabeth] until 38 Jan 1655/6, when "it is Ordered by the whole Towne that while Widow Bradly contineweth in ye Towne, and is implyed as a midwife, wherin she hath bine verey helpfull, specially to ye farmes, and doth not refuse when called to it, she shall have a house and home lot, wch may be convenient for her, rent free." ["Ancient Town Records, Vol. 1. New Haven Town Records1649-1662," 265} Elizabeth did not long remain in New Haven, as she married a widower, John Parmelee of Guilford. Although she can hardly have been his wife more than two or three years when he made his will on 8 Nov 1659 [New Haven Probate Records, vol 1, part 1, p. 86], he seems to have been very pleased with her, as he left her his entire estate 'dureing the whole time of her life," and after her death half his house and home lot were to go to his son, John Parmelee, Jr., a quarter to a Parmelee grandson, and the other quarter he gave to his wife to dispose of "to her sonne Stephen if she see cause"; and his personal estate at Elizabeth's death he gave to his own daughter, Hannah wife of John Johnson of New Haven, and to Elizabeth's daughter , Ellin wife of John Allen of New Haven, equally.
