While there certainly was an Elizabeth Phillips who married one William Ward on 1 May 1626, there is no evidence to suggest that the William Ward she married was he who emigrated to New England and was one of the first settlers of Sudbury and then Marlborough, MA. See Allegations for marriage licences issues by the Bishop of London, 26:168.

While this marriage record does exist, there is no proof to link the William Ward of this 1626 marriage to the William Ward who settles in Sudbury and Marlborough, Massachusetts. That said, such a first marriage does line up nicely with the estimated ages of the oldest Ward children.
