Facts and Events
I believe she had brothers Wilson 1840, William 1838, and John W. 1829. John is living next to her in 1880 in Cass Co., Illinois. I believe she may be found in the 1850 census in Menard Co., Illinois in the houshold of Joshiah Cook 43; with wife Jane 43; [her children?] Wilson 20; Albert 18; Lavina 16; Elizabeth 14; William 12; Melville 2; and Martha 6. David Lounsberry is listed on the same page with his family. There are marriage records for Joshiah Cook and Jane Peek in 1846 in Menard; and for Levina Peak m. O[range] N[iles] Mcarthur in 1854; Wilson Peek m. Mary Ralph. Elizabeth married David Lounsberry about 1855 in Menard Co. and had two children Mary J. abt 1857, and Eunice 1861, then married John Peter Dick in 1864 in Cass Co. and had children William, Alice, Hattie, and Edward. She married Benjamin H. Shankland in 1876 and had children Lee and Ora. In the 1860 census for Richmond, Cass co., Illinois, John Dick is 50 from Kentucky, farmer; John P. is 7; Emily 5; James W. 2; Elizabeth Lounsberry 24; Elizabeth McHenry 20; Emma (Sandberg?) 2 -- all born Illinois -- (Jordan Schern) 24 Germany and (?) 24 from Ohio. {p. 122} In the 1870 census for Richmond, Cass Co., Illinois, John P. Dick is 63, farmer from Kentucky; with Elizabeth 36 from Illinois; John 18; Emily 15; James 12; William 5; Alice 3; and Hattie 3 months. Unice Lonberry [Elizabeth's child by Lounsberry] is 12. {p. 432} NOTE: I believe John was first married to a Eunice Lounsberry, so he may have been related by marriage to Elizabeth's first husband. "Feb. 2, 1876, [Benjamin H. Shankland] married Mrs. Elizabeth Dick, of Menard County, daughter of William and Jane Peak, natives of Kentucky. Two children are the result of this union: Lee, born May 30, 1878, and Ora, born May 20, 1881." {"Illinois: History of Cass County, Illinois", ed. William Henry Perrinl 1882; Cass County USGenWeb, <http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcass/Perrin/biographies/shankland.bh.txt>} In the 1880 census for Township 18, 9 Range N., Cass Co., Illinois, B. H. Shankland is a farmer, age 36 from Kentucky (parents Kentucky). His wife Elizabeth is 43, born Illinois, (parents Kentucky). The children are Lee, male, 2, born Illinois (father Kentucky, mother Illinois); [by his first wife] Bell Shankland 10, born Illinois; Walter Dick, stepson, 15, born Illinois; Alice Dick, 13; and Edward Dick, 13. There is also William Peak, farm laborer, 23 from Illinois (parents Kentucky) -- possibly Elizabeth's brother or nephew; Ellsworth Plugh, farm laborer, 17, born Illinois [probably son of Benjamin's sister Emerine (Shankland) Plew] then Emma Cook, servant, 27; and Louis Zeiglemyer, farmer, age 28 from Illinois (parents Switzerland). {NARA T9-0178, p.654a} I believe she divorced Benjamin Shankland before 1897, possibly after the death of their son Lee (1878-1889). Lee is buried in Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, Chandlerville, Cass Co., Illinois. "Son of [R.H] & E. Shankland 'God in his wisdom called the Son his love had given and though the body moulders here, the soul is safe in heaven'. {USGenWeb Archives} In the 1900 census for Chandlerville, Cass Co., Illinois, Elizabeth Shankland is 64, b. Nov 1835 in Illinois (parents Kentucky), widowed, with 5 of 7 children living, landlord; with son Ora 18, born June 1881, single, born Illinois (parents same). {ed 9, sh 9a} In the 1910 census she is living with son Ora in Chandlersville, with 6 of 7 children living. I believe she is buried in Oakford Cemetery in Menard Co. Illinois as 'Elizabeth Lounsberry, wife of David Lounsberry and John P. Dick', 19 Nov 1835 - 20 Jun 1911. {<http://rootsweb.com/~ilmaga/menard/cemetery/cem_oakford.html>} |
