Facts and Events
David BELL, later titled David BELL of Blackhall, born 10apr1792, christened 11apr1792 in Barony parish as 1st child (scotlandspeople website), married Elizabeth ORR, sister of Sir Andrew ORR of Harviestoun and Castle Campbell, Clackmannenshire (born 1801/1802, died 19apr1872 (Memoirs and portraits of 100 Glasgow men; glasgowstory website)/1874 (wikipedia) at Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire). Elizabeth was daughter of Francis ORR of Francis Orr & Sons, Glasgow, wholesale stationers (Memoirs and portraits of 100 Glasgow men; glasgowstory website). Francis Orr, stationer, was born 6sep1766 at Glasgow, son of John Orr and Agness Reid (IGI). Thus John Orr must have died in abt 1767. Agnesss Reid was born abt 1729. this is evident from “Glasgow past and present” by Robert Reid, publ. 1884 (or 1856) by David Robertson. Archibald Glen (26dec1801-23nov1842, rootsweb) was a relative of Mary Glen, Elizabeth's mother; he lived latterly at Glenarch, Craigmore, Rothesay, next to Old Craigmore, the house built by David Bell. In 1841 the Orr family (all born in Lanarkshire, the 1st 3 with occupation “independent”), James (1781), Onihen (1806), Wllm (1811), Elizebeth (1821), Janet (1821) and 1 servant were at Glenfield, St. Mungo’s parish, Glasgow. James’ birth date and “Onihen” are presumably wrongly trnscribed. On a 1913 map and in a 1937 photo James Orr St. and Glenfield St. joined Alexandra Parade and Warnock St. Only the latter 2 still exist, to the west of Townmill Rd. David married Elizabeth 13jul1845 at Barony (IGI) and Glasgow (Old Parish Records on microfiche). In Scottish Archives there is the will registered of „Elizabeth Bell 12may1891 nee Orr, 13 Blythswood Sq., Glasgow and Harviestoun Castle, Clackmannanshire, Widow of David Bell, Craigmore and Blackhall, d. 12apr1891 at Glasgow“. Elizabeth died 12apr1891. In 1891 Elizabeth O. Bell (b. 1821), living on private means at 13 Blythswood Sq., visited Walter W. W. Reid (b. 1822) at 12 Blythswood Sq. (census). In 1881 James Orr (b. 1813 Glasgow), head, farmer of 808 acres, 75 arable, employing 14 men, 2 boys and 2 women, and Elizabeth Orr Bell (b. 1816 Glasgow), sister, annuitant, and 5 servants were at Harviestoun Castle, Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire (census). David Bell (1792-1863) drew up his will 11jan1860 at Glasgow adding Codicils on 1mar1861 and 11apr1862. He nominated and appointed as trustees Elizabeth Orr or Bell, wife, George Bell, accountant in Glasgow, nephew, James Orr, merchant, Glasgow, Matthew Walker, writer, Glasgow, Benjamin Barton Bell his nephew and John Hutchinson Kerr, elder son of John Ker Junior. Beneficiaries were, among others: his wife, giving her the option of the house Craigmore or a flat at “La Belle Place fronting the West End Park”. After his death his widow Elizabeth took a great interest in General Booth of the Salvation Army and it is said that he was visiting her at the time she caught influenza and died (information from N.
