When Was Elizabeh Born?

That Thomas Meadows/Meador and his wife Elizabeth had a daughter named Elizabeth who married a Campbell is documented by court and land record records listing her as an heir of both her father (in 1819, 1827) and her mother (in 1839, 1827).[5][11] The birth and death dates usually attributed to her[1][2] seem to be based on a burial in close proximity to the burial of another known daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth.[5][13] However, as has been noted by some, the birth date given by the cemetery record is too early for her to be the daughter of Elizabeth.[3] As well, the same cemetery record has attributed to a different Elizabeth Campbell, wife of Alexander Campbell, a probable brother of James Campbell.[13][14]

What can be said is that she may have married before June 1810, since she appears to be missing from her father's household in the 1810 Census.[10] She thus was likely born about 1795, or 1796, as suggested by Russ Meador.[3]

Marriage

That Elizabeth was living and married from 1819 though 1839 is, again, supported by court and land records.[5][11] In 1830, there were five Campbell families living near each other and near Nathan Shelly in Whitley County.[15] Of the heads of household in 1830, two, James Jr. and William, apparently had wives named Elizabeth.[12][16] Based on the 1830 Census, however, the wife of James Campbell Jr. is too old, while the wife of William Campbell is too young. This could be a problem with the records themselves, as seen for other families (that of Nathan Shelly, for example).

William Campbell and his wife Elizabeth appear in the 1850 Census,[16] where they are living with Elias Worley (grandson of Willey Worley and Dorcus Meadows). Elizabeth, again, appears to be too young to have been married by 1810. William Campbell apparently died before 1860, and his widow appears in the 1860 Census, again, too young to have been married by 1810.[4]

Unlike William Campbell, James Campbell does not appear in the 1840 Census, and may have died shortly before it was taken. However an Elizabeth Campbell, widow, does appear in the 1850 Census, age 55 (thus born about 1795),[16] and again in the 1860 Census,[4] age 65. In spite of apparent problems with the 1830 Census, she seems the most likely daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Meadows, and widow of James Campbell Jr. Since both she and the widow of William Campbell continued to own property after their husbands died, further research in property and related records could help to confirm these relationships.

Death

Elizabeth does not seem to appear in the 1870 Census, but an Elizabeth Campbell, age 91, mother of Andrew Campbell does appear in the 1880 Census,[17] most likely the Elizabeth whose gravestone appears the Jellico Creek Cemetery.[13] Andrew also owned property,[18] and further research for him could help resolve the question of which Elizabeth is marked by the gravestone.
