Elizabeth Cissie Marshall was born on 6th July 1901 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Kempson, and her husband John Marshall, a straw hat blocker and bricklayer. She was the fourth of five children, and the couple's only girl. Although her first name was Elizabeth, she was generally known as Cissie or Cis. Apparently her mother had wanted to call her Cissie, but her father wanted to name her Elizabeth after her mother. Her father went out and registered her birth, putting his preferred name first, but all that happened was she became known by her middle name.
Cissie appears in the 1911 census living with her parents and siblings at 44 Cambridge Street.
Cis and Sydney's wedding. In 1924, aged 22, Cissie married Sydney Mead, who was 24. They stayed in Luton, and had two sons. At the outbreak of the Second World War, they were living at 34 Rutland Crescent in Luton.
Sydney died in 1979, aged about 80. Cissie outlived him by 18 years, reaching the age of 96. She died on 23rd November 1997.
