Sydney John Foster Mead was born on 28th October 1899 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of Emily Sarah Mead, formerly White, and her husband Simeon Edward Mead, both of whom worked in the straw hat industry. The 1901 and 1911 censuses both find Sydney at home with his parents and siblings at 44 Cowper Street in Luton.
Sydney and Cis's wedding. In 1924, aged 24, Sydney married Elizabeth Cissie (Cis) Marshall, who was 22. They had two sons. At the outbreak of the Second World War they were living at 34 Rutland Crescent in Luton and Sydney was working as a heat treatment furnaceman in one of Luton's heavy industries.
Sydney lived at 34 Rutland Crescent for the rest of his life. He died in 1979, aged 80. Cis outlived him by nearly 18 years.
